Hackers Gain Access to Virgin Media’s New Fibre Optic Package

TechWatch a technology site recently reported that Virgin Media has noticed over a thousand users who seem to be operating with broadband speeds of 30Mb, even though their packages don’t offer speeds anywhere close to it.

It seems that the new super fast 50Mb broadband service now has a thousand odd hackers making full use of the connection without paying anything for it. Virgin Media, which took some time to realize that such a thing was going on, probably never thought that its premium service, also called Virgin Media XXL, would come under such an attack by the hackers.

It has been revealed that the hackers were able to reconfigure their modems and equip themselves with access to the company’s new fibre optic package. The hackers could reproduce the modems after reengineering the new kit being distributed by Virgin Media to their latest subscribers. Don’t know what you’re broadband speed is? Then click here for and instant broadband speed check.

Virgin media has not yet commented on how it plans to overcome this problem but the law does offer some strict provisions for such offences. Modifying your broadband modems to gain an entry to an improved service for which you are not eligible can leave you with a deep hole in your pocket or you could even be sentenced to serve a term in prison.
